Our Universe is full of interesting theories and unsolved mysteries. We believe that the earth is not the only habitat in the outer space. We also believe that there might be many such earths possible in the universe which we are not aware of. Earth has the only natural satellite, our moon, whereas Jupiter has 53 Named and 23 unnamed Moon.
Our Neighbour Mars has 2 of them and Venus has none. Why does a celestial body revolve around another? Is there life possible on the moon? What if, we have another secret moon? Well such questions are open to research.
In this video we will learn more about our moon and try to find out what will happen if one fine day our moon decides end the eternal relationship. The Moon has always been by our side since the eternity. Do we really need the Moon in the night sky? Does the earth really need to moon to survive? What is its actual purpose? We will decipher all these questions in this video.
If the Moon were to one day simply disappear, there would be some disastrous consequences that would have an irreversible effect upon life on Earth.
Effect On Oceans:
The Moon’s gravitational pull tugs on Earth — especially the portion that is nearest to the Moon. Earth’s crust rises slightly (several centimeters) due to this force. Ponds and lakes — such as the Great Lakes — experience small tides, as well. Earth’s oceans (and atmosphere), however, are free to lift many feet in response this tug. As the Moon orbits the Earth, it drags along behind it a “bulge” in the oceans. On the side of Earth opposite the Moon, the gravitational pull is less than on any other part of the Earth and the oceans are “left behind” in another bulge.
Early in Earth’s history, the Moon was even closer to Earth. Billions of years ago, the Moon was 10 times closer and tides were 1000 times higher. Scientists believe that these extreme tides occurred once every three hours because the Earth was spinning more rapidly. The tides eroded the coastal areas, adding minerals to the oceans. These minerals may have been essential for life to evolve as quickly as it did.
Effect on Animals
A missing Moon could cause a lot of confusion for animals all over the world. Predators rely on both the darkness of night and a small amount of moonlight to effectively hunt. Without any light at night, prey would likely thrive because predators would have a harder time spotting them. Just like the tides, this could cause a drastic change in ecosystem, and potentially lead to the extinction of certain predatory animals.
What would happen to the seasons if the Moon disappeared?
It is the pull of the Moon’s gravity on the Earth that holds our planet in place. Without the Moon stabilising our tilt, it is possible that the Earth’s tilt could vary wildly. It would move from no tilt (which means no seasons) to a large tilt (which means extreme weather and even ice ages).
Effect on Length of Days
Over time, the Moon’s gravitational pull on the Earth “stole” some of Earth’s spin energy, launching the Moon slowly into higher and higher orbits. [The Apollo laser experiments confirmed that the Moon is moving away at the rate of two inches (five centimeters) per year.] The distance between Earth and Moon increased and the spins of both decreased. Today, Earth spins once every 24 hours.
No Eclipse
Forget about seeing any lunar eclipses — or any solar eclipses — without the moon, there would be nothing to block the sun.
